Spawn by Greg Capullo

Curator's note

Created by Todd McFarlane, Spawn first appeared in Spawn #1 (1992) from Image Comics, the company McFarlane co-founded after leaving mainstream superhero publishing. Al Simmons, a mercenary murdered and remade in Hell as a Hellspawn, is defined by a living, necroplasm-fueled cape and chains. This piece follows artist Greg Capullo's redesign of the character, introduced during his run beginning with issue #16, which gave Spawn his now-iconic cape and spiked gauntlets.
